The Dubuque Street Bike Trail that connects Iowa City and North Liberty is having its grand opening on Friday, Oct. 14. The completion is a long time coming.
I helped Irene Schroeder as an assistant for her bike touring class at University of Iowa for a few semesters. We followed the trail north from Iowa City, but turned off to the Coralville Reservoir because the trail ended. I always felt bad that we were taking the 150-some students over five weekend classes on this route that they likely wouldn’t feel comfortable navigating on their own. Having a safe and easily navigable route might encourage the students and lots of other people to get out and explore the area by bike or foot.
I am also looking forward to having the trail for rides with my son and daughter. There really aren’t many extended trail options. Last summer, my wife road with my son up to get ice cream or pizza in North Liberty a few times and it’s hard to argue with a ride to Red’s, but the traffic can be disconcerting and dangerous. Plus, it’s more enjoyable not to have to compete for space.
Here’s the details about the trail opening:
4-4:30 p.m., Friday at Juniper and Dubuque Streets in North Liberty.
Here is more info from the Facebook page:
